Understanding heic to pdf

HEIC is what an iPhone saves by default. It is efficient — roughly half the size of an equivalent JPEG — and it is also the format Windows, most web forms and most enterprise systems refuse to open. Converting to PDF is the usual workaround.

Conversion is a two-step process: the HEIC container is decoded to a standard bitmap in the browser, then embedded into a PDF page. Decoding is the expensive part, so a batch of 12 MP photos takes a few seconds each.

The result is a normal PDF that anyone can open, print or attach, with the pages in the order you selected the photos.

Practical tips

  • Convert in batches of ten or so; decoding many high-resolution photos at once is memory-hungry on phones.
  • To avoid the problem in future, set the iPhone camera to 'Most Compatible' so it records JPEG directly.
  • Compress the finished PDF if you are emailing more than a handful of pages.

Troubleshooting

Decoding is slow
HEIC decoding in JavaScript is heavy. Desktop browsers are markedly faster than phones for large batches.
A file will not decode
Some HEIC variants (depth maps, Live Photos) are unusual containers. Export a JPEG copy from Photos instead.
