N-up imposition places several source pages side by side on one output sheet. Two-up is the standard for reading drafts on paper; four-up and six-up are for reference copies and handouts where legibility matters less than page count.
Each source page is scaled proportionally and centred in its cell, so nothing is cropped — you simply get smaller pages. A 10 pt body font at four-up is roughly 5 pt on paper, which is close to the practical limit for reading.
Halving or quartering the sheet count is the single most effective way to cut printing cost and paper use for internal documents.
