Understanding organize pdf

Organising rebuilds the page tree of a document: you reorder, rotate and delete pages visually, and the tool writes a fresh PDF whose pages appear in the sequence you set. It is the tool to reach for when a scan came out in the wrong order.

Duplex scanners are the classic cause of scrambled documents — they produce all the odd pages first and then all the even pages in reverse. Dragging pages into place here is usually faster than rescanning the stack.

Every action is applied to page references only. No image is re-sampled and no text is re-flowed, so the finished document is byte-for-byte as sharp as the source.

When you would use it

  • Fixing a duplex scan where the reverse sides came out in reverse order.
  • Moving an appendix from the middle of a report to the end.
  • Deleting blank separator sheets a batch scanner inserted between documents.
  • Rotating a handful of landscape charts inside an otherwise portrait document.

Practical tips

  • Delete before you reorder — fewer thumbnails means less dragging.
  • Rotation is stored as a page attribute, so rotating here is lossless and reversible.
  • For documents over about 200 pages, thumbnail rendering gets heavy; consider splitting the file first.

Troubleshooting

Thumbnails are slow to appear
Each page is rendered on a canvas by pdf.js. Large scanned pages take longer; give the first render a few seconds before interacting.
