Understanding page numbers

Numbering stamps real text onto each page using an embedded standard font, so the numbers are selectable, searchable and crisp at any zoom — unlike a numbering image burned into the page.

The typical need arises after merging or reordering: the document is correct but nothing tells a reader where they are. Consistent numbering also makes review comments usable ("see page 14").

Position, starting number and format are all worth thinking about for legal or academic documents, where front matter is often numbered separately from the body.

When you would use it

  • Numbering a merged bundle of exhibits for a legal filing.
  • Adding folios to a scanned manuscript before circulating it for review.
  • Preparing a printed report where readers must reference specific pages.
  • Numbering a compiled appendix that starts at a page other than one.

Practical tips

  • Leave the first page unnumbered when it is a cover — start the count on page two.
  • Bottom-centre is the safest position: it rarely collides with existing headers or scan artefacts.
  • Number after all merging, splitting and reordering is finished, otherwise the sequence will not match.

Troubleshooting

Numbers overlap existing content
Switch position or increase the margin so the stamp sits in clear space.
Numbers are missing on scanned pages
They are drawn on top of the page; if the scan image covers the whole sheet, choose a position inside the visible margin.
